Volkswagen Golf Wins World Car of the Year

AJAX, ON / NEW YORK CITY, NY ––– April 9, 2009. The new Volkswagen Golf  was named the 2009 World Car of the Year as announced today during the New York International Auto Show.

A jury comprised of fifty-nine international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world chose the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf for this prestigious global award, topping the other finalists, the Toyota iQ and the Ford Fiesta.

"We are very honoured by this award acknowledging our best selling model worldwide," said John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. "This award provides a tremendous boost for our upcoming introduction of the new Golf this fall to the Canadian market along with the new GTI and Golf Wagon."

The Golf has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries, making it one of the top selling vehicles of all-time. The award-winning sixth generation new Golf first debuted at the Paris Motor Show last fall, and made its North American debut at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto this February.

The new Golf embodies Volkswagen's product strategy aimed to sharpen the brand design in all classes. It is designed and German-engineered to be quieter and sportier while presenting a clean, distinctive appearance that remains true to its fun-to-drive Volkswagen heritage.

The 2010 Golf will be available in dealer showrooms across Canada this fall and with Volkswagen’s BlueMotionTechnologies award-winning TDI Clean Diesel powertrain early next year.
